Playful Penguins (Reception)

In the Reception Class, we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework.

There are seven areas of learning. These are:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development where children develop relationships, develop self confidence and self awareness and learn to manage feelings and behaviour.
  • Physical Development which develops gross and fine motor skills, through moving and handling and also health and self care.
  • Communication and Language which focuses on listening and attention, understanding and speaking.
  • Literacy which involves reading and writing.
  • Mathematics which is about number and shape, space and measure.
  • Understanding the World which looks at people and communities, the world and technology.
  • Expressive Art and Design which enables children to be creative through exploring and using media and materials and being imaginative.


As well as following these areas of learning, we also take into consideration your child's Characteristics of Effective learning. This shows us how your child learns, through creating and thinking critically, playing and exploring and active learning.


In Reception, children learn in a range of ways. We plan activities to allow children to experiment and investigate through play. Children have the opportunity to choose self initiated tasks and there is also an expectation that they spend some time in adult focussed activities. Throughout the day, they are involved in class introductions to themes and concepts.


These are our learning objectives throughout the year, which we approach initially through stories.

SEAL work to help children settle into school and develop new friendships. Understand how to share and play fairly. Resolving conflicts.

Developing confidence to speak to others, about their own needs..

Understand rules & boundaries in the setting.

Developing vocabulary and language skills.

Play imaginatively and develop a narrative in play.

Experiment with different ways of moving.

Handle tools, construction apparatus safely and with control. Show preference for a dominant hand to begin to write recognisable letters.

Show an understanding for safety in PE challenges.

Enjoy playing with sounds, making rhyming strings and hearing sounds in words .Begin to blend and segment sounds to read words and simple sentences. Give meaning to marks as they write and paint. Use clearly identifiable letters to communicate meaning. Write their name.

Recognise numerals 1-5 then 5-10. Count 1-5 then 5-10 objects. Count objects which cannot be moved.

Select the correct numeral for 1-5 then 5-10.

Describe relative position eg behind or next to.

Order two or three objects by length or height.

Name shapes and use them to build models. Make repeating patterns.

Similarities and change in the season eg Autumn and Winter.

Family customs and routines both within their own family and within other families and cultures. Look at Divali, Hannukkah and Christmas.

Explore ice and how it can change. Operate a simple computer program.

RE: Who is special and why? What is a good friend like?

Explore colour through painting, printing, collage, rubbings.

Use dough and clay to explore 3D sculpture.

Learn a repertoire of songs about the seasons.

Use instruments to explore sounds and to tell stories.

Develop imaginative play eg Celebrations role play and encourage children to develop a narrative in their play.

Continuation of SEAL themes Play games with rules. Learn to solve minor conflicts finding a fair solution.

Speak confidently, choose the resources they need and say when they need help. Leading to listening to others and planning how to achieve an outcome without adult help..

Provide opportunity to develop further skills of listening, for example listening to instructions and carrying them out accurately. Listen with sustained concentration.

Answer how and why questions and develop this to express views and opinions. Use past, present and future forms accurately, leading to using a range of vocab in imaginative ways.

Continue to use large and small apparatus, including bats and balls. Develop skipping skills with ropes. skip in time to the music. Continue to stay healthy making healthy choices. Learn to dress and undress independently.

Provide opportunity to develop handwriting skills, and formation leading to holding paper in position.


Continue to read regular words of more than one syllable and also irregular high frequency words in stories. Show a good understanding of what they read .Develop skills to read unfamiliar words Continue to use skills to sound out to spell. Enjoy writing simple sentences and stories and work towards spelling high frequency words.

Continue to use numbers to 20, counting, recognising, sequencing and forming them. Continue to develop skills of addition and subtraction and solving other problems involving doubling halving and sharing. Count in groups of 2, 5 and 10. Continue to solve problems using shape, measure, money, time and pattern. Learn how to estimate.

Talk about features of the environment and how it can be changed by man. Experiment growing seeds and make observations. Look at changes in nature eg tadpoles. Look at floating and sinking. Talk about life in the past. Look at life in Kenya and customs and traditions of others.

RE: What is special about our world? What do you like in nature?

Encourage the children to use the ideas and techniques they have learnt in original ways to express their ideas and thoughts. Allow children to use music, creative area, role-play and encourage talk and discussion about their ideas and how they could develop them further. Encourage children to access materials independently.
